Our hero

I was in San Antonio twice last week. One for time for work and one time for play. My second trip was to Cannon Field in South San Antonio for a fly-in. Basically a fly-in is where pilots are invited to fly their planes to an airport and put them on display for people to look at. Cannon Field was no more than a couple of hangars with a grass runway for very small planes. The experience, though, was really neat.

There were lots of cool old planes, like this one...

and this one...

But the one closest to our hearts was this one...the Stinson L-5. Grandpa Todd flew one of these planes in WWII. These small "L-bird" planes were used for many missions in the war including artillery spotting, search and rescue, evacuating the sick or wounded, and transporting personnel. Most of which are done by helicopters these days.

This was Grandpa's chance to fly in an L-bird all over again. A member of the Alamo Liaison Squadron in San Antonio was happy to take him up for a ride.

He even got to take over the controls for a little while when in the air!

What a thrill! The last time Grandpa was in one of those planes was 1945!

It was great to be able to share that experience with him! Next time maybe I'll get a ride... :)
